Vacation Rentals on property that is zoned other than hotel or condominiums has been a controversial issue on the Island of Maui. Many residents feel it is an okay idea, because it helps the economy. Plus it can be convenient to have a B & B close by when family and friends come to visit. Then there is the not-in-my-backyard camp. Some people feel having visitors coming and going in the neighbor causes more noise and congestion and takes away from the tranquility of their home. The battle went on for several years and the wise leaders of the County Council set up regulations so homeowners could apply for permits and operate a legal Bed & Breakfast. The idea being that at least it is regulated and limited in the number of permits. That still left many homeowners who did not want to go the B & B route, and just wanted to rent out rooms or ohanas without always being on the property and serving breakfast. Just be a "Vacation Rental" in the broad sense of the term. So the contrversy continues. The Mayor of Maui, Alan Arakawa, has finally come out and weighted in on the future of "Vacation Rentals" on Maui. He feels a need to help promote a healthy economy for the islands of Maui, Lanai, and Molokai and VRs can be another source of revenue as well as a tax generator. He does demand their be input from neighborhoods and strick regulations.
