What is the origins of New Years Resolutions?
January 01, 2015

Resolutions have been essential to ringing in the New Year since 2000 B.C. when Babylonians held semi-annual festivals around the spring and autumn equinoxes. Back then, people marked the beginning of a New Year by paying off debts and returning borrowed goods. This practice carried over into Roman times with worshipers offering resolutions of good conduct to a double-faced deity named Janus, the god of beginnings and endings. When the Roman calendar was reformed, the first month of the year was renamed January in honor of Janus, establishing January 1 as the day of new beginnings.

When I think of New Year's resolutions and new beginnings, the book The Four Agreements, by Don Miguel Ruiz, pops into my mind. For me there is no better way to get right with the world than to get right with myself.

1. Be impeccable with your word.

2. Don't take anything personally.

3. Don't make assumptions.

4. Always do your best.

The term strategy has been studied for years by business gurus. Still there is no definitive answer about what strategy really is. Ask three people, you'll get three different descriptions. 'The Four Agreements' book's inspirational message, about a reemergence of the self from the bubble of conditioning, is still a powerful one. These four simple agreements will support you in every way through every change you want to make.

As TS Elliot says
"For last year's words belong to last year's language,
And next year's words await another voice -
To make an end is to make a beginning"

Have yourself a Healthy, Fun Loving, and Prosperous 2015.

Aloha, Roan

Thank you, Beth
